Think-power
Society has changed from an industrial society to an information and knowledge society, in which social media strongly influences how we deal with old and new knowledge.
Knowledge is the new raw material of our society.
To prevent young and old from getting lost in this knowledge society, citizens must develop qualities with which they can increasingly perform complex tasks to streamline the information chaos of social media and determine their direction.
Our narrative power is the first step to getting a grip on our lives and what happens around us.
This narrative power is strongly influenced by the tendencies that neglect the functioning of our brains.
Many people professionals think that through their education they have developed sufficient critical thinking skills that are automatically used to neutralize this bias in our thinking and actions.
Even if you are challenged to use critical thinking skills during your education, this does not give you an automatic pilot for 'critical thinking'.
It is often difficult to formulate arguments logically about why you want something in a certain way.
As a result, many conversations get stuck in the ping-ponging of opinions and emotions.
Developing the automatic pilot for 'critical thinking' is essential in today's information society, in which social media try to influence us to a large extent.
It is becoming increasingly clear that in a world where world powers, multinationals (of which social media are a part) use pure and impure, true and false information via these social media to influence viewers, readers and listeners.
Publishing fake news, fictitious visual information, fallacies and deliberate untruths are daily practices in providing information.
Every citizen, but certainly the people professional who supports citizens as a job, must be convinced of this and actively defend themselves by developing their thinking power as an 'automatic pilot critical thinking'.
Warning: Critical thinking does not happen automatically. It goes against the energy-efficient tendency of our brains. It is hard work to organize thoughts, formulate arguments and reasoning, and unravel issues at stake to be able to make good and well-founded arguments.
Work in progress:
If you want to strengthen your Thinking Power, you can do this, among other things, by increasing your vocabulary to think and speak about your mental skills.
You can learn to switch between "fast thinking" and "slow thinking" (Kahneman, 2011).
You can learn to switch between associative, metaphorical, and causal thinking.
There is ample literature to support your efforts and argumentation software products to train your argumentation skills. (rationaleonline.com)
